Alina Habba has left her position as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This follows a legal ruling that challenged her eligibility to occupy the role.

Official Departure

The nation's top law enforcement official, the Attorney General, accepted her stepping down on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for the official to perform her duties.

"Let no one confuse compliance for surrender," she wrote. "This battle will now extend throughout America."

Court Ruling

The departure comes a week after a US appeals court ruled that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This decision is expected to impact numerous legal proceedings in New Jersey.

The court declared that a temporary posting that did not receive confirmation by the US Senate breached the federal law governing appointments.

Ongoing Legal Battle

Bondi said that the former prosecutor will continue working within the DOJ as a senior adviser. She will challenge the decision of the ruling, with hopes of a reversal.

Writing online, the Attorney General argued that the court "cannot be permitted to second-guess the executive's selection of lawyers responsible for performing the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."

The attorney general praised her tenure and noted that during her run, the city of Newark saw a 20% reduction in criminal activity. It was also reported that the city of Camden recorded its first summer in 50 years without a homicide.

Connection to Donald Trump

Habba, was initially recruited to the former president's legal defense in recent years. She later represented her client in his New York criminal case in New York last year, which resulted in his conviction on 34 counts of document fraud.

Earlier, her appointment to the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had revealed he was naming her as his White House advisor if re-elected, calling Habba as a steadfast ally and a relentless legal advocate.
