Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
