Two Victims Revealed in the Ivy League School Shooting as Law Enforcement Continue Search for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the recent tragic incident at Brown University were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person questioned in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow on social media, remarking: “There are no words. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
Nine other people were injured in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 arrested in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.
The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the media outlet.
Law enforcement that searched the lodging found two handguns and magazines when the individual was detained, the news agency reported.
Those Hurt
Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was discharged from care, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
More Condolences
Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”
Broader Statistics
The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
